Route from Mumbai to Matheran
Mumbai to Matheran road trip is a scenic journey of 2 and a half hours. Although it’s a small short road trip, you still need to know the traffic updates and the road conditions, especially the Ghat roads. The common route to reach Matheran from Mumbai is via Mumbai–Pune Highway, which is around 82 km long. On this route you travel via Chowk village, then until Karjat and then through Neral. However, before reaching Matheran, you will need to get down at Dasturi Naka as after this point, no vehicles are allowed.
You can also travel via Badlapur – Katai Rd, which is of similar distance. There is one more route from Mumbai to Matheran. It is around 100 km long and goes via Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Hbr Link.
Places to visit in Matheran
Matheran boasts of several scenic locations. Here are a few of the popular sightseeing locations.
Louisa Point
A must visit in Matheran, Louisa point is undeniably one of the best view points of this town. It is quite famous as a suitable location for camping, hiking and even horse riding. The view of Prabal fort and Vishalgad fort is also worth admiring.
Charlotte Lake
You cannot miss this lake when in Matheran. Spend a few moments of peace and serenity by the side of its waters. It is also popular for birdwatching. You can also visit the Pisarnath Mandir, which is located nearby.
One Tree Hill Point
Known for trekking and mesmerising views, this viewpoint is a must visit in Matheran. It is around 3 km from the centre of the town. Another viewpoint to visit along with is the Panorama Point.
Shivaji’s Ladder
It is located near One Tree Hill Point. It is a pathway surrounded by scenic greenery. A common trekking point, it has steps which appear like a ladder.
Echo Point
As the name suggests, at Echo Point, you can hear your voices back after hitting the rocks. Apart from the picturesque view, it is popular for zip lining and rope climbing as well. You can find this viewpoint on the left side of Charlotte Lake.
There are several more viewpoints in and around this hill town. Visit at least a few of these- Monkey Point, Alexander point, Honeymoon Hill point, Porcupine Point, Chowk Point, Garbut Point and Sunrise Point/Rambagh point (near Karjat), Palasdari Lake, etc.
Once in Matheran, we would suggest that you stay for a longer duration as there are many places to explore around this hill station too. Some of these are Prabal Fort, Morbe Dam (30 km), Dhodani Waterfalls, Irshalgad Fort, Karnala Bird Sanctuary and Karnala Fort.
Activities and Things to do in Matheran
Blessed with picturesque trails such as Kalavantin pinnacle, Chanderi caves, Irshadgad fort and Louisa point, trekking is a popular activity in Matheran. Rappelling and rock climbing are two other common adventure sports here.
To experience nature from close, keep a day aside for camping. Kalavantin Durg Valley Campsite, Sabharwal Farms Campsite, Pay Master Park, Alexander Point, Louisa Point and Attra Holidays And Camping Farms are a few of the popular camping sites in and around Matheran.
The horse racecourse in Raigad- Olympia is also frequented by sports lovers. A ride in the Neral-Matheran Toy Train is also a fun thing to do, especially if you are travelling with children.
Shopping in Matheran

In Matheran, you can relish a wide variety of Maharashtrian dishes. Many of the places here offer authentic and flavourful dishes. Mouth-watering dishes like Usal, Puran Poli, Vada Pav, Bhakri, Varan Bhaat, Batata Vada and Misal Pav are just a few to name.

Best time for Mumbai to Matheran road trip by car

From November to February, the weather is cold, and perfect for bonfires and cosying up. Even from March to June, it remains pleasant, ranging from 22 to 33 degree Celsius.
