Route from Mumbai to Pune
There are two common routes to reach Pune from Mumbai by rental car. The first route is via Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This route goes via Panvel, Rasayani, Khandala, Lonavala, Devghar, Urse and Hinjawadi before reaching Pune. It takes around 3 hours of time to cover this route.
On this route, you can stop for sightseeing at places like Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Karnala, Duke’s Nose and Mahadeva Temple in Khandala, Bushi Dam of Lonavala and Pawna Lake of Maval. You can also stop and explore Lohagad Fort, Tikona Fort, Tung Fort, and Visapur Fort.
Another route for Mumbai to Pune road trip is via NH 48. It is around 152 km in distance and requires almost 4 hours of driving. On this route, you will cross Panvel, Khalapur, Khopoli, Lonavala, Kamshet and Pimpri-Chinchwad. While travelling on this route, if interested, you can stop and explore tourist attractions at Lonavala, Kamshet and Pawna Lake.
Places to visit in Pune
Shaniwar Wada
Built in 1730 AD by Bajirao I, it used to be a place of residence for Peshwas until 1818. This historical fort was a prominent location for the rise of Maratha Empire and Indian politics. This 13 storey palace showcases the history of Peshwas.
Aga Khan Palace
Aga Khan palace is a grand place, which played a crucial role in the recent history of modern India as well. During the Quit India Movement, this palace was used as a jail by Birtishers for keeping Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadeobhai Desai. Inside the palace, there are marble memorials of Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadeobhai as well.
Sinhagad Fort
Located on a hilltop, above 1290 metres above sea level, this fort is around 25 km from the city center. One of the majestic forts of Pune, this fort was the place where a trusted general of Shivaji Maharaj- Tanaji Malusare had fought Britishers alone and won. The fort is an ideal place for a simple trek and for admiring the panoramic view of the dense greenery around.
Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati temple
A prominent religious shrine of Pune, it is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. In this temple, you will see a 2.2 metres high and 1 metres wide idol of Lord Ganesha. The idol is said to have ornaments of more than 40 kgs of gold. It was built in 1893 by Dagadusheth Halwai, a rich businessman.
Lal Mahal
Lal Mahal was built in 1630 AD by Shri Shahaji Bhosale, father of Chhatrapati Shivaji. This palace was built for his wife Jijabai and son. It was also the residence of Chhatrapati Shivaji for many years. The original palace faced a lot of damage with passing years. So the current structure is in its renovated form.
