Route from Mumbai to Aurangabad
For a drive from Mumbai to Aurangabad, you can choose from three different routes.
The shortest route from Mumbai is around 330 km long. It takes about 6 hours to cover this distance by car. This route goes via NH160 and the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway (Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg).
The route, which takes the longest time to travel is via Bengaluru – Mumbai Highway, Mumbai – Pune Highway- Satara Highway, later joining NH 753F. It is about 390 km but the journey takes 8 hours of time.
Another common Mumbai to Aurangabad route is via NH60 and Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway. It is 428 km long but you can cover this distance in 7 and half hours.

Places to visit in Aurangabad
Ellora caves
A UNESCO world Heritage site, it is impossible to cover Aurangabad without visiting Ellora caves. Also known as Verul caves, these are a group of 100 caves, dating back to the 6th Century. Only 34 caves are open to the public, belonging to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.
Grishneshwar Temple
Located inside the Ellora Caves, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is the smallest out of the 12 jyotirlingas in India. Renovated in the 18th century, this temple is a must visit not only to seek blessing but also for its sculptures and carvings.
Ajanta Caves
A UNESCO World Heritage site, constructed in the 2nd century BCE, Ajanta Caves are an example of architectural mastery in ancient India. These are a group of 30 natural rock-cut caves. These caves are associated with Buddhism.
Daulatabad Fort
Constructed in the 11th century, this fort stands majestically on a conical hill top. You are required to climb around 60 steps to reach the top of the fort. Once at the top, you will be mesmerised by the view of the surrounding valley. It is around 15 km from the city centre. The prominent sections of this fort are Chand Minar, Baradari and Chini Mahal.
Salim Ali Lake
Salim Ali Lake enjoys a perfect location as it is close to Delhi Gate and is opposite Himayat Bagh, which is another popular sightseeing place. If you wish to spend some time amid nature, looking at different varieties of birds flocking over the trees and water, then visit this lake.
Bibi Ka Maqbara
Bibi Ka Maqbara was built by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1661 in the honour of his wife Rabia-Ul-Daurani alias Dilras Banu Begum. Called the Taj of Deccan, it looks very similar to the Taj Mahal of Agra. The use of white marble, architecture, minar, dome, and even carvings inside are strikingly similar in both.
